How to study the Bible

How we study the Bible will determine what we get from the Bible. If our approach is indifferent, the results will be incomplete and possibly invalid.  Accurate and conducive Bible study demands a carefully concentrated effort.  The gold mine of truths within Gods Word are ready to be extracted by those who study God’s Word.
In careful Bible study, the use of multiple translations is necessary.  Various translations give the ability to compare versions and gain different insights while studying God’s Word.  It is wise in this process to use versions that don’t fall within the same translation philosophy.  According to Mardel, (Mardell, N.D.) some versions are word for word, some thought for thought, and some are a balance of both.  Along with using multiple translations, it’s wise to research scripture with resources such as commentaries, articles, and books on the subject, as well as cross-reference tools.  I’ve found each means to be helpful in sermon preparation.  I enjoy using reference tools to gain supportive scriptures that align with scripture that I’m studying.
The Inductive Bible Study method of observation, interpretation, and application, when done correct, should produce godliness.  One cannot study the Bible and come away the same as they started.  Undoubtedly Paul was a man of God’s Word.  In his challenge to Timothy, one can see this, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”  (II Timothy 2:15 KJV)  Paul had learned the importance of Bible study in being able to divide the Word of Truth.
As Christian, it’s imperative that we practice careful study of God’s Word.  It’s important that we discover what mode of education that best fits our mental makeup.   While all research should fit within the inductive Bible study methods, the tools used will be different.  The challenge is to find the tools that fit you.  Once found, you can step out publicly and confidently share Truth.  In our age, it's imperative that we do this as ministers.  The church world needs leaders who can teach Truth.  One of the most impactful ministries of the Church is sharing the interpretation and application gained from Bible Study.
People are hungry for truth will we do the work to give them hunger quenching truth?
